Sheldon Marsh, the Old Gateway to Cedar Point
In 1954, Doctor Dean Sheldon,a Sandusky obstetrician and conservationist, purchased 56 acres from Cedar Point, which included the original entrance and roadway to the amusement park. He called it Sheldon’s Folly, and made it a wildlife conservation area. He also built a small cabin as a family retreat and opened the area to visitors like the scouts and youth groups. His heirs later sold the property to the state.
This beautiful stretch of land, now known as Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve, boasts rich biodiversity and serene landscapes. Before Dr. Sheldon’s acquisition, the land and the nearby road—one of Ohio’s first concrete thoroughfares—served as the original entrance to the iconic Cedar Point amusement park, making it a site of historical significance.
In the 1970s, the State of Ohio recognized the value of this enchanting area and acquired it from Dr. Sheldon’s estate. Today, visitors can bask in the tranquility of this natural oasis, where birdwatchers delight in the variety of feathered species, hikers explore winding trails, and beachgoers can trek along the shore, all while enjoying the stunning views near Sandusky. And some have even seen strange flickering lights along the shoreline, although their origin is still unknown!

Hike old roads to a quiet beach and along the way, explore woodland/marsh trails and observation decks. Hikers park at the old Cedar Point entrance near the Sawmill Creek Resort, a small lot near the trail. If facing US-6 and the historical sign, go left toward the pedestrian-only service road (the car exit) and make another left to the old roadway. Hikers follow the old road (there will be dirt paths and trails to the left along the way), and when it ends, take a right on the intersecting roadway. This route takes hikers past two observation decks and eventually to a sand trail/walkway that leads to the beach. From the parking area, about 0.8 miles one-way. Hikers can also explore the beach until it turns into private property marked with signs.
