Clear Fork Gorge Overlook Trail: Walk in the Footsteps of a Nearly Forgotten Legend

Land of the Legendary Johnny Appleseed

The Gorge Overlook Trail is a relatively new addition to the park, but its origins date back to the 1930s when the Civilian Conservation Corps first developed the path. Over time, the trail fell into disrepair and was no longer used. However, in 2018, the Mohican Trails Club undertook restoration efforts, transforming it into an exciting option for hikers. This trail is perfect for adventure lovers, featuring a swinging bridge and a ladder climb.

John “Appleseed” Chapman, the legendary figure known for planting apple trees across Ohio, frequently traveled through the Mohican Gorge on his way to nearby nurseries. Chapman, a missionary, introduced trees grown from apple seeds at the nurseries he tended, many of which were located in the Mohican area. He planted his trees in fenced nurseries to protect them from livestock and left them in the care of local residents, returning every two to three years to tend to them. By hiking this trail, you can experience a thrilling route, complete with a swinging bridge and ladder climb, all while enjoying the wilderness much like Chapman did during his journeys in Ohio.

The Hike: 1.8 miles, moderate to strenuous. When facing the gorge at the parking lot, there is a graveled walkway leading to a trailhead/overlook to the left. Hikers will see a sign noting the Gorge Overlook Trail along with a warning of the hazardous cliff edges. Descend this dirt path through a deep forest overlooking the gorge below following the white blazes. At the bottom and as the trail meets with the Clear Fork Branch of the Mohican River, turn right to continue along so that the stream is to the left. The path eventually passes the notable swinging footbridge, which traverses the stream and connects Hemlock Gorge Trail with the Gorge Overlook Trail. However, the Gorge Overlook Trail continues past the bridge (the bridge will be on the left) and ascends at this point quite dramatically and with steep steps and thick tree roots and, at one point, a wooden ladder to climb to get to the next level. Hikers continue at a more gentle climb before the trail forks. Hikers go straight back to the parking area.
