Deep Lock Quarry: The Abandoned

This site was historically significant as it housed a Berea sandstone quarry that was active until 1918. The sandstone extracted here played a vital role in the region’s infrastructure, being utilized in the construction of the Ohio and Erie Canal. Notably, it contributed to the development of Lock 28, the deepest lock on the canal, which has a rich history and is a central feature of the park’s identity.
