Blue Hen Falls Trail

The scenic trail leading to Blue Hen Falls is a captivating segment of the expansive network of over 125 miles of pathways within Cuyahoga Valley National Park. As you navigate the trail, it closely parallels the picturesque route of the Buckeye Trail, offering beautiful views and a gentle progression toward the majestic waterfall.

Blue Hen Falls itself is a stunning natural feature, created by the serene Spring Creek as it cascades over layers of Berea Sandstone, eventually plummeting into the underlying Bedford Shale. The sight and sound of the water tumbling down the rocks create an enchanting atmosphere that beckons visitors to pause and appreciate the beauty of nature.

The origin of the falls’ intriguing name has sparked curiosity and inspired several theories. One popular suggestion points to an illicit whiskey still from the Prohibition era, aptly dubbed “Blue Hen.” Another tale tells of a local resident who stumbled upon a deceased blue hen at the waterfall’s base, leading to the waterfall’s unique and memorable name. Each theory adds a layer of history to the enchanting allure of Blue Hen Falls.
